On the Wine-Dark Sea | Sul mare color del vino

🇬🇧 On the Wine-Dark Sea is a backdrop for Dialect designed and written by Daniele Di Rubbo, and inspired to the events of the second Greek colonisation and, in particular, to the downfall of Sybaris.

We left our land, by the will of the god, on the great ships, cutting though the wine-dark sea. We hoisted the sails, and we turned them towards the goodwill of the winds and the fates. The places from which we came were beautiful and fruitful, but we were plenty and for some time have been feeling the hunger. For a long time, we heard the travellers and the musicians sing of other distant lands, across the great sea of the ancient heroes. That’s why we left on the great ships.

We could never imagine landing on the calf’s land, flowing with milk and honey: a land green and generous, far more beautiful and fruitful than the ones from which we came. The gods had heard our supplications to lift from the smoke of the sacrifices, were favourable and, at last, smiled on us.

🇮🇹 Sul mare color del vino è uno scenario per Dialect ideato e scritto da Daniele Di Rubbo, e ispirato alle vicende della seconda colonizzazione greca e, in particolare, alla caduta di Sibari.

Lasciammo la nostra terra, per volere del dio, sulle grandi navi, solcando il mare color del vino. Levammo le vele, e le volgemmo alla benevolenza dei venti e dei fati. I luoghi dai quali provenivamo erano belli e fecondi, ma noi eravamo molti e da tempo sentivamo la fame. A lungo avevamo udito i viaggiatori e i musici cantare di altre terre lontane, al di là del grande mare degli eroi dell’antichità. Per questo partimmo sulle grandi navi.

Mai avremmo potuto immaginare di approdare sulla terra dei vitelli, dove scorrevano latte e miele: una terra verde e generosa, molto più bella e feconda di quelle dalle quali venivamo. Gli dèi avevano ascoltato le nostre suppliche levarsi dal fumo dei sacrifici, ci erano stati favorevoli e, alla fine, ci avevano arriso.
