How to print your booklet | Come stampare il tuo manualetto

🇬🇧 When I set the goal of donations needed to go to press, I set the quota at €150. Why?

Well, before embarking on this venture, I went to my usual online printing site, PressUP, and set the printing parameters.

This is a 15 × 15 cm square booklet. Since it's all in colour (there's not a single millimetre of black: what you see as black is actually a very dark green, taken from a Lovecraftian-themed smartphone palette), I chose to go for 115 gsm matt coated paper for the inside. I was undecided whether to use the same paper, but 350 gsm, for the cover, or to go for some kind of Fedrigoni cardboard (those who know me know that I love them).

I asked two friends of mine, Giovanni and Talisa, and they both advised me to stick to matt coated paper for the cover as well. In particular, I should have lowered the grammage but, for the inside, I can't go below 115 gsm (lower weight paper is not available), instead for the cover I will have to go down to 250 gsm.

Laminating the cover was an option in the field, but as soon as I learned that this makes the paper no longer recyclable, I refused to do it for environmental reasons.

The printer I would like to use is FSC-certified, which is an international label that shows that the paper used has followed an environmentally friendly supply chain. To find out how to use the label correctly in the print, I contacted my friend Nicola and the support of PressUP. Both were very kind and helped me to understand everything.

But I didn't answer the question above. Why €150? Well, because I had seen that, even if I changed the paper and the weight, the printing cost would only change by a few euros. So putting €150 was a good approximation. Actually, I had not considered one thing, but I will talk about that in another entry of this devlog.

In short, beyond the revision of the text, which is still in progress, I am already moving forward to understand how I will then proceed to print. I now know what the printed booklet will look like.

🇮🇹 Quando ho impostato l’obiettivo di donazioni necessarie per andare in stampa, ho fissato la quota a 150 €. Perché?

Be’, prima di imbarcarmi in questa impresa, sono andato sul sito di stampa online che uso di solito, PressUP, e ho impostato i parametri di stampa.

Trattasi di un libretto quadrato da 15 × 15 cm. Siccome è tutto a colori (non c’è un singolo millimetro di nero: quello che vedete a occhio come nero è, in realtà, un verde molto scuro, preso da una palette per smartphone a tema lovecraftiano), ho scelto di buttarmi sulla carta patinata opaca da 115 g/m² per l’interno. Ero indeciso se usare la stessa carta, ma da 350 g/m², per la copertina, o se buttarmi su qualche tipo di cartoncino Fedrigoni (chi mi conosce sa che li amo).

Ho chiesto a due miei amici, Giovanni e Talisa, ed entrambi mi hanno consigliato di stare sulla carta patinata opaca anche per la copertina. In particolare, avrei dovuto abbassare la grammatura, ma per l’interno non posso scendere sotto i 115 g/m² (non è disponibile carta di peso inferiore), invece per la copertina dovrò scendere a 250 g/m².

La plastificazione della copertina era un’opzione in campo ma, non appena ho saputo che questo rende la carta non più riciclabile, mi sono rifiutato di praticarla per ragioni ambientaliste.

Lo stampatore di cui vorrei servirmi è certificato FSC, che è un marchio internazionale che dimostra che la carta utilizzata ha seguito una filiera ecologica a basso impatto sull’ambiente. Per capire come usare il marchio in maniera corretta nello stampato, ho sentito il mio amico Nicola e il supporto di PressUP. Entrambi sono stati gentilissimi e mi hanno aiutato a capire tutto.

Ma non ho risposto alla domanda di sopra. Perché 150 €? Be’, perché avevo visto che, anche cambiando la carta e il peso, il costo di stampa sarebbe cambiato solo di pochi euro. Per cui, mettere 150 € è stata una buona approssimazione. In realtà non avevo considerato una cosa, ma di questo parlerò in un altra voce di questo diario di sviluppo.

Insomma, al di là della revisione del testo, che è ancora in corso, mi sto già portando avanti per capire come poi dovrò procedere a stampare. Ora so come sarà il libretto stampato.
